Optimize Your Content With LSI Keywords
What are LSI keywords?
LSI stands for Latent Semantic Indexing and it is a natural language processing technique. LSI keywords are simply words that relate to the main topic of an article and help search engines better understand the context of a page.
Here’s an example:
Main topic – Whiskey
LSI keywords – glasses, cocktail, bar, barrel, Irish
Note – an LSI keyword is not the same as a synonym.
“Car” and “Automobile” are synonyms.
LSI keywords for car would be: road, drive, tires, accident, race
They are terms that are commonly associated with the main topic.
Why use LSI keywords?
LSI keywords help Google to better understand what your article is about.
In the old days, you could “keyword stuff.” So, if you were writing an article on whiskey, you could flood the article with the word whiskey, search engines would see that term is used often and assume that this article must be about whiskey.
This allowed people to game the system and rank very poor articles.
LSI keywords help to give Google a full picture of your content which can help them be confident in the context of your article.
Here is what Google has to say: “These relevance signals help Search algorithms assess whether a webpage contains an answer to your search query, rather than just repeating the same question. Just think: when you search for “dogs”, you likely don’t want a page with the word “dogs” on it hundreds of times. With that in mind, algorithms assess if a page contains other relevant content beyond the keyword “dogs” — such as pictures of dogs, videos, or even a list of breeds.”
How do I find LSI keywords?
If you are familiar with your topic, you will most likely be including plenty of LSI keywords into your content. But if you want to dive deeper, here are some tools you can use to find LSI keywords:
https://lsigraph.com/ – This is specifically built to find LSI keywords, although, I tend to find that it returns more synonyms than LSI keywords, but it can still be a helpful place to get ideas.
Google Auto-Complete – Start typing your keyword into Google and see what auto-complete suggestions come up. There can be LSI keywords here.
https://keywordtool.io/ – Another tool that will spit out a bunch of related keywords and other variations of the keyword.
Ubersuggest – Ubersuggest has a related keyword feature that can work well for finding LSI keywords.
Google Keyword Planner – If you have an active Google Ads account, you can use it to find LSI keywords by looking at the suggested search term results.
Where do I use my LSI keywords?
Now that you have keywords, all you need to do is sprinkle them throughout your content.
This can include everything from your URL, Title, and Headers to simply using them in your regular content.
Again, if you know the topic and created a quality article, you almost certainly already have included plenty of LSI keywords, but if you are unsure, it can help to go back and review your article.
