How to Create an XML Sitemap and Submit it to Google

In this article, we are going to show you how to create an XML sitemap and submit it to Google.

What is an XML sitemap?

A sitemap is essentially a list of all of the webpages and content on your website that you want Google to know about and index. They help to make sure that Google (and other search engines) are aware of all of the content on your website.

If Google doesn’t know about your content (ie index it), then it cannot rank it.

How to create a sitemap

We’re going to walk through creating a sitemap for a WordPress site. I’ll include links at the bottom for other types of platforms.

1 – You will need to install a plugin. There are a number of plugins that you can use, including:

Rank Math

Yoast SEO

Google XML Sitemaps

Go ahead and install and activate the plugin of your choice. I’ll be using Rank Math in this example.

2 – Once Rank Math is activated, navigate to the Rank Math dashboard, scroll down to the Sitemap box and make sure the Status is set to Active:

3 – Then, click on “Sitemap Settings” in the menu on the left and you should see your sitemap URL highlighted in blue. Copy this link. Here is what the one looks like:

*Note, for now, you can leave the default settings.

*Note, once you have your sitemap URL, the following steps should be the same for everyone.

4 – Head on over to Google Search Console –

5 – Make sure you are on your site and then click Sitemaps in the left-hand menu.

6 – Paste (or type) your sitemap URL into the “Add a new sitemap” section and then click Submit.

7 – You should see a “Sitemap submitted successfully” box pop-up.

And there you have it!

You just created an XML sitemap and submitted it to Google.
