How to Add Your Website to Google Analytics

In this article, we will show you how to add your website to Google Analytics.

Along with Google Search Console, Google Analytics is another powerful, free tool that will help us to gather and make decisions based on data from our websites.

In this article we are not going to dive deep into analytics, we will simply get it set up on your site so you can begin collecting data.

How to Add Your Website to Google Analytics

  1. Go to

    Click on “Start measuring”

  2. Enter your Account name

    This is typically the name of your website or business.

    There are a number of boxes you can check or uncheck. These are all up to you, I typically leave them all checked. When you are ready, click next.

  3. Select what you want to measure

    For most people in this course, you will just select Web, but if you have an App as well, then select the appropriate setting. Then select Next.

  4. Enter your Website information

    Your Website Name: This is typically the main part of your URL. For, I would enter “ 5 Min SEO”

    Your Website URL: This is your URL. Make note of HTTP vs HTTPS.

    Industry Category: Select the most appropriate one for your business.

    Reporting TIme Zone: Select the time zone that you are in.

    When everything is filled in, click “Create”

  5. Agree to the Terms and Service

    Legally, I should tell you to read through these.

  6. Get your Tracking ID

    Alright! You have created your set up your Google Analytics account, now you need to add a piece of code to your website. 

    Right after you accept the terms of service, you will probably need to select some email preferences and then it will take you to a page with your Tracking ID.

    This will be a string of digits that looks like UA-123456789-1.

    Save this number and open up a new tab.

  7. Add your Tracking ID to your website

    Alright, this is where it is going to look a little different depending on what your website is built on. I’m going to show you how to add it to a WordPress site, and I’ll include some links to other platforms as well.

    For WordPress, the easiest way is to install a plugin like “Site Kit by Google.”

    There are other plugins that you can use as well. But this is made by Google for this purpose and it is easy to use and set up.

    Once, you have Site Kit installed and Activated, it will walk you through a quick set up.

Once your Site Kit set up is complete, you can connect to your Google Analytics account.

This will walk you through a few steps and should have you quickly connected.

It will take a little bit of time for the data to start rolling in, so for now, you are good to go.
